Article About Liguria - ITALY
Imperia
One of the major towns of Liguria, Imeperia resulted form the union of Oneglia and Porto Maurizio. It is home to the only muesum dedicated solely to olive oil production. Imperia is the fourth largest town in Liguria. It became a municipality in 1923 as a consequence of the union of Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, which are divided by the River Impero. Despite their coming together, Oneglia and Porto Maurizio remain distinctly different. Porto Maurizio, which began developing during 1000 AD, was an ally of Genoa from the thirteenth century on, while Oneglia, whose origins date back to medieval times and is the natural sea outlet of the Impero Valley, was allied with the House of Savoy as of 1576. In Porto Maurizio, the cathedral and the historic buildings are well worth a look. While in Oneglia, stop by the church of San Giovanni Battista the Palazzo Doria, now completely transformed. It was the birthplace of Andrea Doria. There also you'll find the “Il museo dell'olivio”, the Olive Museum, which was built in 1992.(See pictures below) One of our most spectacular Villas, "Villa Incantata", is just 1.3km from the center of town.
